the rant
I did not do the math before I started. "42 five-inch squares" sounded like a reasonable, breezy weekend project. It was not a weekend project. Squares are a lie — nothing about cutting 42 identical squares by hand is fast, and at least six of mine are not, in fact, identical, which you can absolutely tell if you look at row four for more than a second.
Also learned the hard way that hand-quilting through three layers takes about four times longer than I estimated, and that my thumb will hate me for a solid week afterward. Worth it. The couch has never looked better. My thumb disagrees.
